Description
Activated Carbon Media is granular activated carbon (GAC) made from coconut shell, supplied in 25 kg bags for loading into FRP or steel filter vessels. Activation creates a vast network of tiny pores inside each granule, giving an enormous internal surface area that adsorbs chlorine, organic compounds, taste, odour and colour from water.
It is a core media for whole-house carbon filters, dechlorination ahead of RO membranes, and polishing in commercial and industrial plants.
What Activated Carbon Media removes
- Free chlorine, protecting RO membranes and softener resin
- Unpleasant tastes and odours, including tank and earthy smells
- Colour from natural organic matter
- Many organic chemicals, pesticides and solvents
It does not remove hardness or dissolved salts.

Why coconut shell?
Coconut-shell carbon has a high proportion of fine micropores, which are ideal for chlorine and small organic molecules found in drinking water. It is also hard and low in dust, so it lasts longer in backwashed filters and produces cleaner water after start-up.

How much do I need?
As a guide, a 1054 vessel takes around one to one and a half bags, a 1354 two to three bags and a 1665 four to five bags, plus a gravel support layer. We calculate the bed depth for the contact time your application needs. See vessels in housings and pressure vessels, complete pretreatment filters, and more media in the media and chemicals range. For background, see Wikipedia.
Replacement and loading
Carbon is replaced when chlorine starts breaking through, typically every 12 to 24 months depending on load. Soak and backwash new carbon thoroughly to remove fines before service.
Frequently asked questions
Can old carbon be regenerated? For small systems, replacement is far more practical.
