Description
Silica Sand Filter Media is washed, graded quartz sand used as the main filtering layer in pressure sand filters and swimming pool filters, and as the fine layer in multimedia filters. Water flows down through the bed, and suspended particles such as silt, clay, rust and algae are trapped between the sand grains. Periodic backwashing lifts the bed and flushes the trapped dirt to drain.
It is supplied in 25 kg bags in grades to suit filter design.

Why graded silica sand?
Filter sand must be clean, hard, rounded and uniform. Builders’ sand contains dust, shells and mixed sizes that cause channelling, cloudy water and media loss during backwash. Properly washed and graded Silica Sand Filter Media gives predictable filtration and backwash performance, and lasts many years.

Sand does not wear out quickly, but over time it can clump, grow biofilm, or become coated with iron and scale.
