Description
Anthracite Filter Media is a hard, graded coal media used as the top layer in multimedia and dual-media pressure filters. Anthracite granules are larger and lighter than sand, so they sit on top of the sand bed after backwashing. Dirty water meets the coarse anthracite first, which captures larger particles, then fine sand below polishes the water. This “coarse-to-fine” arrangement lets the whole bed hold more dirt and run longer between backwashes.

Designing a multimedia filter
A typical multimedia filter has a gravel support layer at the bottom, a layer of silica sand, and a layer of Anthracite Filter Media on top, with enough freeboard above for bed expansion during backwash.
