Description
The RO Membrane Cleaner Alkaline is a high-pH clean-in-place (CIP) chemical for reverse osmosis and nanofiltration membranes. It is formulated to lift and dissolve organic fouling, biofilm, silt and colloidal deposits from the membrane surface, restoring permeate flow and reducing differential pressure. It is supplied in 20-litre cans for commercial and industrial RO plants.
When to use an alkaline cleaner
RO membranes foul in two main ways. Mineral scale such as calcium carbonate and iron is removed with an acidic cleaner. Organic and biological fouling, silt and colloids are removed with an alkaline cleaner. Signs that you need the RO Membrane Cleaner Alkaline include:
- Normalised permeate flow down 10–15% from baseline
- Differential pressure across the first stage rising
- Slimy deposits or musty smell when opening vessels
- Feed water from open tanks, wells or surface sources
Most CIP procedures run the alkaline clean first, followed by the acid clean.

How a CIP clean works
- Flush the RO with permeate water.
- Prepare the cleaning solution in the CIP tank and warm it if specified.
- Recirculate through the membranes at low pressure.
- Soak, then recirculate again.
- Flush thoroughly, then follow with acid cleaning if required.
