Description
Calcite pH correction Oman — crushed calcium carbonate media that raises the pH of acidic water by dissolving slowly into it. It is used on RO permeate that has come out flat and slightly acidic, on borewell water with a low natural pH, and anywhere aggressive water is attacking copper pipework and leaving blue-green staining.
Why low pH matters
Water below about pH 6.5 is corrosive. It dissolves metal from the pipes it travels through, which produces three visible symptoms: blue-green staining on basins and baths from copper, a metallic taste, and pinhole leaks in copper pipework years earlier than they should appear.
The WHO drinking water guidelines recommend a distribution pH in the 6.5 to 8.5 range, largely for exactly this reason. Low pH is not usually a direct health problem; it is a problem because of what it dissolves on the way to your tap.
How calcite pH correction Oman systems work
Water flows through a bed of crushed calcite in a standard FRP vessel. The media dissolves at a rate that depends on how acidic the water is: more acidic water dissolves more calcite and gains more pH, less acidic water dissolves less.
That self-limiting behaviour is the main attraction. Unlike chemical dosing, calcite cannot overshoot. It raises pH toward roughly 7.0 to 7.5 and then largely stops, so there is no risk of over-correcting and no pump or controller to fail.
The trade-off is that it adds hardness. Every milligram of calcite dissolved adds calcium to the water. On borewell supply that is already hard, correcting pH with calcite may push hardness to a level that then needs a softener downstream.
Calcite pH correction Oman for RO permeate
RO removes essentially all minerals, and the permeate is typically pH 5.5 to 6.5 and tastes flat. A small calcite cartridge or vessel on the product line puts back a little calcium and lifts the pH, which improves both taste and the water’s behaviour toward pipework and storage.
This is the same function as the mineral stage in the 7-stage alkaline RO system, which uses a cartridge rather than a bulk bed.
Specification
- 25 kg bag, crushed white calcium carbonate, above 95 percent purity
- Typical grain size 0.5 to 2 mm
- Bulk density around 1,400 kg per cubic metre
- Raises pH toward 7.0 to 7.5, self-limiting
- Suitable for potable use, NSF-grade available
- Used in standard FRP vessels with backwash valve, or in cartridge form for point of use
Calcite pH correction Oman: sizing and top-up
Contact time is what determines the pH rise. A bed sized for 5 minutes of contact at peak flow will do considerably more than one sized for 90 seconds, so sizing follows flow rate rather than tank appearance.
Because the media is consumed, calcite pH correction Oman beds need topping up, typically every 6 to 12 months depending on how acidic the feed is and how much water passes through. Budget for it as a consumable, not a one-off fill. The bed also needs periodic backwashing to prevent the fines from packing and channelling.
When calcite is the wrong answer
Where the pH is very low, below about 5.5, calcite alone cannot lift it far enough and soda ash dosing through a chemical dosing system is the correct approach. Where the water is already hard, adding hardness to fix pH may cost you more in scale than it saves in corrosion. We test before recommending, because these two cases are common in Oman and calcite is often sold into both of them regardless.
