UV quartz sleeve Oman – high-purity fused quartz sleeves with matched O-rings for UV sterilizers. Scaled or etched sleeves stop disinfection while the lamp still glows. Stocked in Muscat by FARZ Water.

Description

UV quartz sleeve Oman — the clear fused quartz tube that separates the UV lamp from the water flowing around it. It is a consumable, not a permanent fitting, and a scaled or cracked sleeve is the most common reason a UV system stops disinfecting while the lamp still glows reassuringly.

Why the sleeve exists

The lamp cannot touch water. It runs at a temperature the water would quench, and it needs electrical isolation. The quartz sleeve holds the lamp dry inside the flow chamber while letting the 254 nanometre germicidal wavelength pass through.

Ordinary glass will not do this. The 254 nanometre germicidal band and the dose levels it must deliver are described in the WHO drinking water guidance. Standard glass blocks UVC almost completely, which is why the sleeve is high-purity fused quartz and why a replacement from a general glass supplier is worthless even if it fits.

How a UV quartz sleeve Oman systems use fails

Three ways, in order of how often we see them here.

Scaling. Hard water leaves a mineral film on the outside of the sleeve. The film is thin, often barely visible, and blocks UV transmission progressively. The lamp is at full output, the controller shows power on, and the dose reaching the water has quietly dropped below the level that kills anything. On Omani feed water this is a matter of months, not years.

Fouling. Iron and organics deposit a brown or greenish film that is even more opaque than scale.

Cracking. Thermal shock from cold water hitting a hot sleeve after a stoppage, or mechanical stress from over-tightening the compression nut. A cracked sleeve floods the lamp compartment, and on most units that means a new lamp and sometimes a new controller.

UV quartz sleeve Oman: cleaning versus replacing

Light scale cleans off with a cloth and dilute food-grade acid, and that is part of a routine service visit. But quartz etches over time, and an etched sleeve scatters UV rather than transmitting it. A sleeve that looks permanently cloudy after cleaning has reached the end of its life regardless of how intact it is.

Replace the UV quartz sleeve Oman systems run on every two to three years, and always replace the O-rings with it. Reused O-rings are the most common cause of a leak that appears a week after a service.

Specification

  • High-purity fused quartz, above 90 percent UVC transmission at 254 nanometres
  • Lengths and diameters to suit common chamber sizes from 6 GPM upward
  • Open-ended or domed-end types, matched to the chamber
  • Supplied with matched O-rings and compression nut
  • Replacement UV lamps available alongside

Fitting a UV quartz sleeve Oman engineers replace safely

Isolate and depressurise the chamber before touching anything, and confirm zero pressure rather than assuming it. Handle the sleeve with clean gloves: fingerprints bake onto the quartz and create permanent shadowed patches. Tighten the compression nut by hand plus a small fraction of a turn, never with a wrench, because quartz cracks long before the thread strips.

Never look at a lit UV lamp outside its chamber. UVC burns the cornea, the pain arrives hours later, and it is entirely avoidable.

Change the lamp at the same time

Lamp output falls to around 70 percent of initial by the end of the rated 9,000 to 12,000 hours, and a lamp that still lights is not a lamp that still disinfects. Changing the lamp and sleeve together on an annual visit is the pattern we recommend, so the UV dose the chamber was designed around is actually delivered.

Sleeves, lamps and O-rings are stocked for the 12 GPM UV sterilizer and the larger UV disinfection system. Where scaling keeps returning, the real fix is a water softener upstream rather than a shorter sleeve replacement interval.
