Description
The GAC Carbon Filter Cartridge is a 10-inch cartridge filled with granular activated carbon (GAC) made from coconut shell. Activated carbon has a huge internal surface area that adsorbs chlorine, chloramine by-products, organic compounds, bad tastes and odours from water. It is stage 2 in most home RO systems and a common filter for drinking water, coffee machines and under-sink filters in Oman.
It fits standard 10-inch housings with a 2.5-inch cartridge diameter.
What the GAC Carbon Filter Cartridge removes
- Free chlorine used in municipal water disinfection
- Unpleasant tastes and smells, including “tank” and earthy odours
- Many organic chemicals and some pesticides
- Colour caused by organic matter
It does not remove dissolved salts, hardness or most bacteria. For those, it is combined with RO, softening or UV.

Why it protects your RO membrane
RO membranes are made of thin-film composite material that is damaged by chlorine. Even small amounts of chlorine over time can destroy the membrane surface, letting salts through. The GAC stage removes chlorine before water reaches the membrane, which is why it is essential in every RO system using network water. For extra protection, it is often followed by a CTO carbon block.

Replacement interval
Change the GAC Carbon Filter Cartridge every 6 months for most homes in Oman, or sooner if you notice a chlorine taste returning. Warm temperatures in summer can make carbon filters a place for bacteria to grow if left too long, so regular changes matter. For more on activated carbon, see Wikipedia.
Frequently asked questions
GAC or CTO, which is better? GAC has lower pressure drop and good taste removal. CTO blocks give finer, more consistent chlorine removal. Many RO systems use both.
Why is the first water black? New carbon can release fine dust. Flush for a few minutes after installation.
