Big Blue carbon cartridge Oman – 20 inch coconut shell activated carbon block for whole-house filtration. Removes chlorine, taste and odour and protects RO membranes. Stocked in Muscat by FARZ Water.

Description

Big Blue carbon cartridge Oman — a 20 inch activated carbon block for whole-house filtration. It removes the chlorine taste and smell from municipal supply, strips organic compounds, and protects every RO membrane and appliance downstream of it. It is also the cartridge most often left in far too long.

What a Big Blue carbon cartridge Oman homes fit removes

Activated carbon works by adsorption. Organic molecules and chlorine bond to the enormous internal surface area of the carbon, roughly 1,000 square metres per gram, and are held there.

It removes free chlorine, chloramine on a suitably specified block, taste and odour compounds, trihalomethanes and other chlorination by-products, pesticides and dissolved organics. Those by-products are among the parameters covered in the WHO drinking water guidelines.

It does not remove dissolved salts, hardness, fluoride, nitrate or heavy metals to any useful degree, and it does not disinfect. A carbon cartridge is not a substitute for RO and it is not a substitute for UV.

The chlorine job is the important one

On any installation with an RO system downstream, this cartridge has one critical function: keeping free chlorine away from the membrane. Thin film composite membranes tolerate almost none, and the damage is cumulative and irreversible.

A Big Blue carbon cartridge Oman installations rely on is therefore a membrane protection device as much as a taste filter. When it exhausts it stops absorbing chlorine silently. The water still tastes acceptable for a while because the block is still removing some organics, and meanwhile the membrane behind it is degrading. That is the single most common cause of premature RO membrane failure we see.

Carbon block or granular

A carbon block is compressed carbon with a fixed pore structure, typically 5 or 10 micron. It also filters particulates and cannot channel. A granular carbon cartridge is loose media: lower pressure drop, more capacity by weight, but water can carve a preferential path through it and bypass most of the bed.

For point-of-entry duty in Oman we fit blocks. The channelling risk on granular is not worth the small saving.

Specification

  • Nominal 20 inch length, 4.5 inch diameter, fits standard Big Blue housings
  • Coconut shell activated carbon block, 5 or 10 micron nominal
  • Chlorine reduction capacity typically 20,000 to 40,000 litres depending on inlet level
  • Flow to approximately 4 cubic metres per hour
  • Maximum temperature 52 degrees, maximum differential 2.5 bar
  • Food-grade materials, no binders that leach

Change a Big Blue carbon cartridge Oman supply demands on schedule

A sediment cartridge shows you it is loaded by turning brown. A carbon cartridge gives you nothing to look at. It will appear identical on the day it stops working.

Change it every 6 months on typical Muscat mains, or every 3 to 4 months on heavily chlorinated or tanker-fed supply. If you want certainty rather than a calendar, a chlorine test strip on the outlet costs almost nothing and tells you exactly when breakthrough has happened.

Never leave a carbon cartridge in past its interval hoping to save money. Exhausted carbon does not merely stop working: the accumulated organics and the warm, wet, nutrient-rich carbon bed become a comfortable place for bacteria to multiply.

Where it sits in the system

Second stage, after the Big Blue sediment cartridge which takes the particulate load first, and before any RO system or softener. On a drinking line it precedes the RO system. Where chlorine is dosed deliberately at a tank by a chlorine dosing system, the carbon block goes at the drinking point rather than at the tank, so the residual still protects the distribution pipework.
