When to Replace Your RO Membrane

Three signs tell you the membrane is finished. Permeate TDS rising steadily above 10 percent of feed TDS is the clearest one, so keep a handheld TDS meter and check monthly. Falling production, where the storage tank takes noticeably longer to fill than it used to, is the second. The higher-rated element fills the tank faster, but it also needs a matching flow restrictor on the drain line to keep the recovery ratio correct. Fitting a 100 GPD membrane while leaving a 75 GPD restrictor in place will raise your permeate TDS and shorten membrane life, so change both together.

Why does my new membrane still give high TDS? Usually one of three things: the flush after installation was too short and the preservative is still coming off, the brine seal is fitted backwards or damaged, or the automatic shut-off valve is leaking and letting feed water bypass into the product line.
