Description
Manganese Greensand Media is a filter media coated with manganese oxide that oxidises and traps dissolved iron, manganese and hydrogen sulphide (rotten-egg smell). As water passes through, the coating oxidises these contaminants into solid particles, which are filtered by the bed and removed during backwash. The coating is maintained by continuous chlorine dosing or periodic regeneration, depending on the system design.
It is used on well water at farms, villas, camps and industrial sites in Oman where iron and manganese levels are high or Birm conditions are not met.
Why choose Manganese Greensand Media?
- Removes iron, manganese and hydrogen sulphide in one filter
- Works over a wider pH range than catalytic media
- Handles higher iron and manganese loads
- Proven technology used in municipal and private systems

How it is operated
There are two common ways to run a greensand filter. In continuous regeneration, a small chlorine dose is added before the filter, which keeps the media active and pre-oxidises contaminants. In intermittent regeneration, the media is periodically regenerated with a potassium permanganate solution. Continuous chlorine dosing is usually simpler for most sites. We design the dosing, vessel and backwash for your water analysis.

Greensand vs Birm
Birm needs good dissolved oxygen and a pH above about 6.8, and does not remove hydrogen sulphide. Manganese Greensand Media handles lower pH, higher manganese and sulphide, but needs oxidant regeneration. Our water test tells us which is the better fit. Frequently asked questions
Can it go after an RO? No, it is a pre-treatment media used before RO or for whole-property water.
Is permanganate dangerous? It must be handled carefully. Continuous chlorination avoids routine permanganate handling.
