Why RO membranes scale in Oman
Reverse osmosis concentrates everything it rejects into the reject stream. Calcium, magnesium, silica and barium that were dissolved and harmless in the feed become supersaturated on the membrane surface as recovery rises. Once they precipitate, they form a hard layer that no flush removes.

Oman’s groundwater carries all four, with silica the most awkward because it scales without warning and resists cleaning. Feed hardness above 300 ppm or silica above 20 ppm means a plant running without antiscalant is on a countdown.
What an antiscalant dosing system Oman plants need does
The chemical works at threshold concentration, typically 3 to 5 ppm in the feed. At those levels it does not remove hardness. It interferes with crystal formation, distorting the crystal lattice so scale cannot nucleate and grow on the membrane surface during the seconds the water is in the vessel.
Because the dose is small and continuous, accuracy matters more than volume. An overdose wastes chemical and can itself foul the membrane; an underdose does nothing at all. That is why the pump is a metering pump with a calibrated stroke, not a transfer pump on a timer.

Interlocking with the RO plant
The dosing pump must start and stop with the high-pressure pump. A plant that runs while dosing is off will scale; a pump that doses into a stopped plant empties the tank onto the floor. We wire the interlock as part of installation, and fit the low-level switch so the plant alarms before the tank runs dry rather than after.
Dose calculation and chemical
The correct dose comes from a scaling projection run on your water analysis at your intended recovery, not from the drum label. We run that projection, set the pump, then verify with the calibration cylinder at commissioning and record the millilitres per hour on the handover sheet.
Antiscalant is stocked in Muscat, so a refill is a delivery rather than a six-week import. Consumption on a 250 LPH plant is modest, typically one 25 litre drum every several months depending on feed chemistry.
Where it fits in the treatment train
Antiscalant dosing goes after the sediment and carbon pretreatment and immediately before the high-pressure pump. On hard water it usually sits alongside a commercial water softener, which handles the bulk hardness while the antiscalant covers silica and the residual. It protects plants from the 250 LPH compact RO system up to the 4000 LPH industrial plant.
