Description
Birm Iron Removal Media is a granular filter media that acts as a catalyst to remove dissolved iron and manganese from water. In the presence of dissolved oxygen, Birm speeds up the reaction that turns dissolved (ferrous) iron into insoluble (ferric) iron particles. These particles are then trapped in the filter bed and flushed out by regular backwashing. Unlike greensand, Birm does not need potassium permanganate regeneration.
It is widely used on well and borehole water at farms, villas and camps in Oman where iron causes orange staining and metallic taste.
Signs of iron in your water
- Orange or brown stains on tiles, sinks and laundry
- Water that is clear from the tap but turns rusty after standing
- Metallic taste in drinking water
- Reddish slime in tanks and toilet cisterns
- Rapid fouling of RO membranes and softener resin

Conditions for Birm to work
Birm Iron Removal Media works best when the water meets certain conditions: enough dissolved oxygen (often added with an air injector or aeration), pH of around 6.8 or higher for iron, no hydrogen sulphide or oil, and low organic matter. Chlorine reduces Birm’s effectiveness. We test your water before recommending Birm or an alternative such as manganese greensand.

Designing an iron filter
A typical system uses an FRP vessel with an automatic backwash valve, a gravel underbed, and a Birm bed with plenty of freeboard. An air injector or aeration tank may be added upstream. Backwash flow must be sufficient to clean the light Birm granules. See vessels in housings and pressure vessels, pretreatment filters and other filter media. Frequently asked questions
Does Birm need chemicals? No regeneration chemicals are needed, only backwashing.
Will it remove hydrogen sulphide smell? No. That needs a different treatment.
