Description
The String Wound Filter Cartridge is a robust depth filter made by winding polypropylene yarn in a precise criss-cross (diamond) pattern around a rigid perforated core. The winding creates tapered tunnels that get smaller towards the centre, so the cartridge traps coarse particles near the surface and finer particles deeper inside. It handles high flow, high pressure and heavy dirt loads better than most spun cartridges.
In Oman it is widely used on well water, in RO plant pre-filtration and in industrial and commercial filter housings.
Why choose a String Wound Filter Cartridge?
- High dirt-holding capacity for long service life
- Rigid core resists collapse under high pressure and flow
- Stable micron rating across a wide range, from 1 to 100 micron
- Good for multi-cartridge stainless steel housings
- Compatible with a wide range of chemicals and temperatures

Typical applications
- Pre-filtration for commercial and industrial RO plants (cartridge filter stage)
- Well water and farm supply with sand and silt
- Cooling tower and process water side-stream filtration
- Food and beverage plant pre-filtration
- Large SS cluster filter housings in hotels and buildings

String wound vs spun cartridges
Spun (melt-blown) cartridges are economical and ideal for homes. A String Wound Filter Cartridge costs a little more but performs better under tough conditions: high flow rates, pressure spikes and heavy sediment. For commercial RO plants we usually recommend string wound or high-quality spun cartridges in a multi-round stainless housing, sized for the plant flow. See related products in our filter cartridges range and housings and pressure vessels.
Replacement interval
Change the cartridge when the pressure drop across the housing rises about 0.7–1 bar above the clean value, or on a fixed schedule set by your maintenance plan. On commercial RO plants this is often every 1 to 3 months. For general background, see Wikipedia.
Frequently asked questions
Can it be cleaned? No, string wound cartridges are designed as disposable filters.
Which micron should I use before RO? Usually 5 micron. Membrane manufacturers typically specify 5 micron or finer cartridge filtration.
