Two pass RO system Oman – single and double stage industrial reverse osmosis for boiler feed, beverage and laboratory duty. Modelled from your water analysis, built on a stainless skid and commissioned by FARZ Water.

Description

Two pass RO system Oman — an industrial reverse osmosis plant where the permeate from the first pass is fed to a second pass instead of to storage. It is specified when a single pass cannot reach the product quality the process demands, which in Oman usually means high feed TDS, a boiler feed specification, or a pharmaceutical or food duty with a hard conductivity limit.

Two pass RO system Oman: when a single pass is not enough

A single pass rejects 95 to 99 percent of dissolved salts. On 500 ppm municipal feed that gives 5 to 25 ppm permeate, which is fine for almost everything.

On 5,000 ppm brackish groundwater the same membrane gives 100 to 250 ppm. For drinking that is perfectly good. For a steam boiler above 20 bar, for a beverage line, or for laboratory feed, it is nowhere near the specification, and no amount of adjusting the first pass will close that gap.

The second pass treats the first pass permeate as its own feed. Starting from 150 ppm rather than 5,000 ppm, it produces permeate in the 2 to 10 ppm range, often below 10 microsiemens conductivity.

How a two pass RO system Oman plants use is arranged

First pass permeate is collected in a break tank or fed directly to the second pass pump. Second pass reject is clean water, around the quality of the first pass permeate, so it is returned to the first pass feed rather than sent to drain. That recycle is what keeps overall recovery acceptable; a two pass plant that dumps second pass reject is wasting good water.

Caustic dosing between the passes is common where the target is very low conductivity. Raising pH converts carbon dioxide, which passes straight through a membrane as a gas, into bicarbonate, which the second pass rejects. Without it, CO2 carries through both passes and holds the product conductivity up no matter how good the membranes are.

Single stage, two stage and two pass RO system Oman terms

The terms get mixed up constantly, and specifying the wrong one is expensive.

  • Single stage — one bank of vessels, reject to drain. Simple, low recovery.
  • Two stage — reject from the first bank feeds a second bank. This raises recovery from around 50 to 75 percent. It does not improve product quality.
  • Two pass — permeate from the first bank is treated again. This improves product quality. It does not raise recovery.

Stages recover more water; passes make purer water. If your problem is a water bill, you need staging. If your problem is a conductivity specification, you need a second pass.

Specification

  • Capacities from 1,000 to 20,000 litres per hour and above
  • 8040 membrane elements in FRP vessels, brackish or low-energy as the water dictates
  • Separate high pressure pumps for each pass, Grundfos vertical multistage
  • PLC control with touchscreen, conductivity monitoring on both passes
  • Automatic flush, high and low pressure protection, permeate divert on quality fail
  • Inter-pass caustic dosing where specified
  • Stainless steel skid, fully pipework and pre-commissioned

What a two pass RO system Oman plant costs to run

Be clear with yourself before specifying it. A two pass RO system Oman sites install adds pumping energy, a second set of membranes to replace, and more instrumentation to maintain. It roughly doubles the membrane count for the same product volume.

Where a conductivity specification genuinely requires it, there is no alternative. Where the requirement is merely “very pure”, a single pass followed by DI polishing is often cheaper to own, particularly at lower volumes. We will run both options and show you the comparison rather than defaulting to the larger plant.

Pretreatment is not optional at this scale

A two pass plant represents a significant investment in membranes. Protecting them means a sand filter, a softener or antiscalant dosing sized from a scaling projection, and iron removal where the borewell requires it. Element data and the projection limits are published in the DuPont Water Solutions technical literature.
